If you’re confused about the rapidly approaching REAL ID deadline and what it means, our Fort Washington BMW dealership is here to help. This new license type comes with new requirements that drivers must be aware of. The BMW of Fort Washington team has assembled this guide to REAL ID for Pennsylvania drivers.
What Is REAL ID?
REAL ID is a new form of driver’s license that acts as federal identification. It is an accepted form of identification for boarding domestic flights and entering federal facilities and military bases. Starting May 7th, 2025, citizens must present a REAL ID or another federally accepted form of ID (such as a passport or military ID) to board a U.S. domestic flight.
Does a REAL ID Affect Driving?
You do not need a REAL ID to drive in Pennsylvania. A non-REAL ID driver’s license will still work as identification to drive or own a vehicle. However, if you’re planning to take a domestic flight, you’ll need either a REAL ID or a valid United States passport to do so.
How Do I Get a REAL ID, and What Do I Need?
Applying for a REAL ID can be done at any Pennsylvania DMV office for a one-time $30 fee. You’ll need a document proving your identity and Social Security number, and two documents proving your Pennsylvania residency. You can either apply for a REAL ID immediately or apply when you renew your driver’s license, giving you flexible options depending on whether you plan to fly soon.
