BMW has recently announced its extended partnership with Solid Power to add an all-solid-state battery (ASSB) to the BMW i7. This innovation provides higher energy density for batteries, giving EVs more power without sacrificing space under the hood. For more on this new technology, BMW of Fort Washington has the scoop.

A New Battery

Solid Power and BMW have been working since 2022 to develop an ASSB that’s built for modern electric vehicles. These types of batteries use solid power cells that contain sulfide-based electrolytes, developed to hold more energy than a liquid power cell. With better energy density and longer lifespans on the agenda for this new technology, it’s set to improve the charging and ranges of BMW models.

A Redefined Model

This battery is currently being tested in the BMW i7; units with the new technology are already prowling Munich’s streets and other environs in Germany. It boosts the already-impressive power of the BMW i7 with better energy generation and power output. Although no full launch has been declared yet, full-scale road testing suggests that these batteries will be available to the public soon.

A Future Revolution

While this battery is being tested in the BMW i7, the battery or others like it will likely be available on other models in the future. Practical road tests will tell BMW and Solid Power engineers how the battery performs under stress. These tests in Munich show the companies the effectiveness of this battery in everyday driving situations, including urban, off-road, and highway driving.
