If you buy a gas-powered car, keeping it full of fuel is usually pretty easy. Things can be a bit more challenging, however, with an electric vehicle. If you’re thinking about buying an electric BMW, this guide goes over the options you’ll have for BMW EV charging.
Level 1
Level 1 charging is the most basic. It consists of a 120-volt outlet – which you have in your home – and just plugging your car into it. Because this type of outlet isn’t terribly powerful, it will only add about three to five miles of driving range per hour.
Level 2
Level 2 charging utilizes a 240-volt outlet, so the power increases substantially. With this type of charger, you can generally get between 15 and 30 miles of range added per hour.
And the nice thing is that you can have a Level 2 charger installed at your home, so you’ll always be able to keep your BMW juiced up. You may also be able to make due with an adapter for the outlet your dryer currently uses.
Level 3
Level 3 charging comes in the form of public charging stations. These are very powerful, as they may utilize outlets that have up to 900 volts. Because of their high-power output, they can typically get a car up to an 80-percent charge in 20 to 30 minutes but aren’t usually available for residential homes.
